We all strive to eat a healthy, balanced diet and to ensure that we take in all the nutrients we need.
As human beings, we eat to live and what we eat will affect our ability to be healthy, work, partake in sport and recreational activities and to live a long life.
We are what we eat – that which we put in to our bodies plays a role in our daily lives and can lead to a state of malnutrition. What exactly is malnutrition? It is an impairment of health resulting from a deficiency, excess or imbalance of nutrients. It includes both under-nutrition (often referred to as malnutrition) and over-nutrition (often referred to as obesity or life style diseases).

In order to be well nourished, we need to take in the correct type and amount of nutrients to sustain our body. Nutrients are the basic building blocks supplied to our body from the food we eat. The different nutrients are:

– Water
– Protein
– Carbohydrates
– Fats
– Minerals
– Vitamins

Each of these nutrients has a specific role to play in order to keep us healthy.
